Understanding Nummular Eczema

You may have heard of eczema, but do you know nummular eczema - also called discoid eczema? It is a special form that is characterized by coin-shaped skin changes. Let's take a closer look together!

What is nummular eczema?

Imagine circular or oval patches on your skin that are red and inflamed. This is exactly what is typical of nummular eczema. These skin changes can be from a few millimeters to several centimeters in size

Why does it arise?

The exact cause is not yet known, but some factors can trigger or worsen it:

  • Dry skin: If your skin is too dry, it is more prone to eczema.
  • Environmental influences: Chemicals, certain metals or frequent contact with water can play a role.
  • Genes: If eczema runs common in your family, you may be more susceptible.
  • Stress: Psychological stress can also intensify the symptoms .

How is it different from other eczemas?

In contrast to atopic eczema, which often occurs in childhood, nummlar eczema usually only appears in adults between 30 and 50 years of age. It is also more limited to certain areas of the skin and has this characteristic round shape .

What are the symptoms of nummular eczema?

  • Round or oval spots: They are often red, inflamed and scaly.
  • Severe itching: This can be really unpleasant!
  • Dry, flaky skin: The affected areas feel rough.
  • Discoloration: Sometimes the spots become darker or lighter than the surrounding skin .

How can you treat it?

A good skincare routine is key! Here's a simple two-step plan:

  1. Use our Grahams Natural Body & Bath Oil when bathing or showering. It nourishes and hydrates your skin with natural oils.
  2. Then apply our Grahams Natural C+ Eczema & Dermatitis Cream. It soothes the skin, reducing redness and itching.

In addition, it is important to avoid triggers and use gentle skin care products. In some cases, light therapy or wet compresses can also help .

What can you do yourself?

  • Care for your skin gently: use mild, perfume-free products.
  • Avoid scratching: Even though it may be difficult, scratching only makes things worse.
  • Relax: Stress management can prevent flare-ups.
  • Wear airy clothing: preferably made of natural fibers such as cotton .

Remember: If your symptoms worsen or you notice signs of infection, you should definitely see a doctor.
