Hey you! 👋

Your baby has red, itchy skin and you're worried? Don't panic! We understand that you're worried and looking for answers. Let's take a look at the topic of atopic dermatitis in babies together and find out how we can help your little darling.

What is neurodermatitis actually?

Neurodermatitis, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin disease in babies and young children. It often appears in the first few months of life and occurs in bouts. The good news is that many children grow out of neurodermatitis over time.

In Germany, around 23 percent of babies and toddlers are affected by neurodermatitis, which is almost 1 in 4 babies. It is a chronic, non-contagious skin inflammation that cannot be cured but can be treated well.

Causes: Why does my baby have neurodermatitis?

The exact causes are not yet fully understood. Experts assume that there is an interaction of various factors:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Disturbed skin barrier
  • overreaction of the immune system
  • environmental influences

There are also a number of triggers that can promote a flare-up of neurodermatitis:

  • stress or excitement
  • Dry air, heat or cold
  • Certain foods
  • Skin contact with irritating materials such as wool or polyester
  • Weak immune system after an infection

How do I recognize atopic dermatitis in my baby?

Typical signs of neurodermatitis are:

  • Dry, flaky skin
  • redness and inflammation
  • Severe itching (you notice this by frequent scratching)
  • Cradle cap (yellowish-white crusts on the scalp)

The cheeks, forehead and scalp are often particularly affected. But the arms and legs can also be affected. In babies under one year old, eczema often occurs on the cheeks, forehead or scalp. It can also spread to the knees, elbows and diaper area.

First aid: What can I do immediately?

  1. Cooling and relieving itching :
Cool compresses or a damp washcloth can provide relief. Keep your baby's fingernails short to avoid scratching.

  2. Moisturize :
Regularly moisturize your baby's skin with nourishing, moisturizing products. Make sure to use mild, perfume-free products.

  3. Gentle bathing :
Short, lukewarm baths (max. 5 minutes) can be beneficial. Use moisturizing bath oils and moisturize your skin directly after the bath.

  4. Adjust clothing :
Choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton. Avoid scratchy labels and clothes that are too tight.

  5. Optimize environment :
Keep your baby cool by dressing him or her in loose clothing and creating a comfortable room climate. Avoid heavy blankets and make sure the air is not too dry.

When should we see a doctor?

If you suspect that your baby is suffering from atopic dermatitis, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician or dermatologist. They can make the diagnosis and create an individual treatment plan.
